What happens in 'The Sandman' - Issue 1?
In issue 1 of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, titled "Sleep of the Just," the story begins in 1916 with an occultist named Roderick Burgess attempting to capture Death in a ritual to achieve immortality. Instead of capturing Death, Burgess inadvertently traps Death's younger brother, Dream, also known as Morpheus.
Dream remains imprisoned in a glass sphere for decades. During his captivity, the world suffers from a mysterious sleeping sickness affecting many people, causing some to fall into deep, unending sleep while others experience extreme insomnia.
Finally, in 1988, Dream manages to escape when a guard falls asleep on duty and the protective circle around the sphere is broken. Once free, Dream punishes his captors and begins a journey to reclaim his lost power and the tools of his trade: a pouch of sand, a helm, and a ruby. This issue sets the stage for the dark and intricate narrative that unfolds throughout the rest of the series.
