Why Suitable Flesh is My Kind Of Weird
Suitable Flesh is this 2023 horror film directed by Joe Lynch which stars Heather Graham - from Twin Peaks, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Scream 2.
In Suitable Flesh she plays this Psychiatric Doctor who, at the start of the movie, has gone insane and has ended up in a Psychiatric Hospital. She then begins to recount her story of how she ended up there in the first place.
Now, it’s important to know that this story is loosely based off the H.P. Lovecraft short story The Thing on the Doorstep. A story which begins of her receiving an awkward and paranoid patient called Asa (played by Judah Lewis from The Babysitter films) who claims that his father likes to take possession of his body.
After Asa disappears from her office and when she later visits his house, you’ll notice lots of cool little Easter eggs littered throughout the house. Even at one point, the camera focuses on an old newspaper which focuses on DUNWICH NEWS which is a clear reference to H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror." It’s during this scene where she encounters Asa’s father (played by character actor legend Bruce Davison) and he dies which is then almost immediately followed by Asa and Heather Graham’s character Dr Elizabeth Derby having sex where this insane story of body-swapping begins to evolve.
Pretty soon it becomes clear that Asa, or the creature inhabiting Asa’s body is anything but innocent. The more the two of them have sex and the closer they get the more frequent the body swapping becomes and the more Dr Derby realises that Asa is trying to take her place and take over her life.
Suitable Flesh is this story that links occultism with the idea of losing yourself and the fear behind going insane and losing control of your own life. It’s this loss of identity which is performed extremely well by Heather Graham as your feel her torment and her life spiraling out of control. A spiral that leads her into the psychiatric hospital, where we first found her at the start of the film. Where she, Asa and Dr Daniella Upton (played by Scream Queen Barbara Crampton) have one last final battle of the wits. A battle which culminates with an ending you wont see coming!
If you really dumb it down, Suitable Flesh is this Lovecraft inspired evil variation of Freaky Friday. It’s a movie which really has a lot to offer and flips the bird to ageism and anyone who thinks that older women can’t provide an equally engaging story as their younger 20-something peers.
It’s these reason and many others which is why Suitable Flesh is My Kind Of Weird.
