Top 6 Horror Movies of 2012 That Still Haunt Us: Bloody Good Picks & WTF Moments

Rewind to Terror: 2012’s Cult Horror Classics You Shouldn’t Sleep On

Every damn month, the internet is plagued with an avalanche of Top Whatever lists. And look, I’m not here to pretend I’m above it. Nope.

Here I am diving into this bastard tradition of ranking, rambling, and reminiscing about the cinematic chaos that was 2012. Why 2012? I say to you this - why the hell not?

Let’s dive in.

  1. Lovely Molly (2012)

Creeping just shy of our top five is this scrappy little indie horror number. Lovely Molly slides you into the life of newlyweds Molly and Tim as they shack up in Molly’s childhood home which, spoilers, comes with enough trauma baggage to sink a cruise ship. Things unravel fast, as Molly’s haunted past claws its way into her fragile present. Eduardo Sánchez (yep, Blair Witch royalty) fuses found footage, handheld chaos, and straight-up narrative filmmaking into an uncomfortably intimate descent into madness. It’s messy, it’s raw, and it’ll absolutely get under your skin.

  1. Silent House (2012)

Critics took swings at Silent House like it owed them money, and sure, it tanked harder than expected at the box office - but honestly? We’re not mad at it. The single-take style is more than a gimmick here. It’s an adrenaline shot straight to the jugular, locking us in so tightly with Elizabeth Olsen’s panicked performance that you can practically feel her pulse racing. Olsen crushes it, carrying the whole thing on her back like a champ. Throw in a few solid scares, a twisty narrative, and relentless tension, and you’ve got yourself a horror experience worth defending.

  1. V/H/S (2012)

Say it with us: horror anthologies rule. And V/H/S? This one delivered the goods. Each short offers its own flavour of terror, but it’s the opening (Amateur Night) and the closer (10/31/98) that really stick the landing. Just when you thought the found footage craze had gassed out, V/H/S grabs the defibrillator and shocks it back to life with raw, unpredictable energy. It’s messy, it’s mean, and it’s exactly the kind of chaotic evil I love in my horror.

  1. The Collection (2012)

Okay, The Collection doesn’t have the most airtight plot. We’ll admit that right out the gate. But what it does have? Spectacularly bonkers kills and a madman villain who makes human taxidermy look like an art form. Think: saw-blade bloodbaths and deranged science experiments in an abandoned hotel straight out of your worst fever dream. It’s the kind of over-the-top gore-fest that’s tailor-made for a late-night watch with friends and questionable snacks. Put it on, and prepare to cringe (in a good way).

  1. Sinister (2012)

Of course Sinister made it to our top three. This movie is pure nightmare fuel. The grainy snuff films unearthed in the attic? Brutal. Ethan Hawke spiralling into obsession? Chef’s kiss. Watching the family murder reels is like a gut punch you weirdly want to experience again - horrifying but weirdly magnetic. Sinister sinks its claws in early and doesn’t let go, wrapping you in a blanket of dread so thick you’ll side-eye every creaky floorboard in your house. It’s haunting, it’s relentless, and it lingers.

  1. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Do we even need to justify this? Cabin in the Woods isn’t just a horror movie - it’s a straight-up genre deconstruction party. Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon took the horror playbook, shredded it, set it on fire, and threw the ashes into a blender with equal parts blood, wit, and meta brilliance. It’s sharp, self-aware, and sprinkled with enough Easter eggs to keep you hitting replay until your streaming service stages an intervention. If horror movies are your toxic ex, Cabin in the Woods is the one who sends you that “u up?” text - and you always answer.

Do these 2012 Horror Hits Still Haunt?

2012 wasn’t just the year the world almost ended — it was a banner year for horror that snuck in some future cult classics. From the mind-bending unease of Lovely Molly and the tension-tight single-take panic of Silent House, to V/H/S resurrecting found footage with chaotic bite, these films didn’t just scare — they lingered. Toss in the gore-drenched insanity of The Collection, the gut-churning dread of Sinister, and the genre-shredding brilliance of The Cabin in the Woods, and you've got a lineup that deserves a bloody encore.
