Logline:
Set in 1950s London during the Great Smog (an event you may remember from the Netflix series The Crown), THE ORDER OF THE CIRCLE introduces us to woebegone Dorothy Schafer, whose husband has been unjustly found guilty of a heinous crime and sentenced to death and banishment to Hell by the titular mystical Order. If that sounds like enough, note that that's just the set-up! By the time Dorothy's story begins, she's been cursed with muteness and has set out for a soon-to-be-bloody quest for revenge. The Order is entrenched in English high society and government, and while posing as a necessary system of law enforcement in a dangerous magical world, they're more like a tool of oppression in service to the status quo. The sly social commentary adds some extra thrill to the already gobsmacking occult action.
The premise is an invitation to a satisfying humanistic story of love across dimensions, the corrupting force of vengeance, and regular folks reclaiming power when their agency is stolen from them. And it's all delivered in gorgeous sketchy, pale-hued art by Elisabeth and Eva who evoke the mid-century vibe by capturing the essence of an old Hammer Horror movie poster in comics form.
